For anyone who hasn't seen the stick height system for dynamics, I'd like to clear something up.

The numbers are in reference to an outdated system that is meant to represent how high the bead of the stick comes up from the drum when playing at a given dynamic. The problem with this system is that a marching snare stick is usually 17" long, so how can the loudest dynamic only be 15"?


TL;DR: Don't take the notated stick heights so literally! They are from an old system and simply refer to dynamics without using traditional dynamic markings.
