One thing that's very evident is that the street cleaners do an AWESOME job. Look beyond the dated buildings, and the streets and parks are immaculate. You will now need to give them some well warranted respect for this alone.

I used to go to Swanly as it had a big Asda about 30 years ago and it was OK then, I mean, better than Dartford.

I wanted to put up a sign saying "TWIN TOWNED WITH CHERNOBYL". But the council said no. (fascists!) Did you notice the closed KFC? There's a bit of a Sweeney Todd rumour behind that. Probably crap, but Swanley also has the highest number of missing persons in Kent. So I'm told.

I was born in Strood and lived in Gillingham until my family emigrated to Australia when I was 14 in 1972. Gillingham was a nice place growing up, lots of fresh fruit & Veg shops, Bakery, Butchers & News agencies etc. when I went back in early 90’s I nearly died. It was putrid and Soo depressing. I was embarrassed to say I had lived there. Dog 🐕💩💩💩💩 everywhere. It was dodge the 💩💩along the high st and surrounding roads. I’ve been told, it went down hill after The Chatham Dockyards closed. So Sad 😢😢😢

Lived in Swanley for over 20 years before moving abroad and can’t say it was that bad. In fact, most people we knew were friendly and whilst the crime rate seems high it was mainly because of a number of gypsy families in the area

It's not that bad honestly- I'm not too far away from it and have seen far worse areas in Kent. I went there with an expectation that it was really dangerous (from all the reviews I'd seen online) and it was pretty far from that (admittedly it was early in the day). Very nice café just outside the station and the town centre did not have much to offer but was not too dissimilar to other areas. Park was great although the dogs were a lot more dangerous than the people. The area just outside Aldi felt as though it might be quite shady at night but again not so appalling. Parts of Chatham, Erith, Canterbury & Medway are far worse. Swanley still needs a lot of work (the Sevenoaks Council should probably stop prioritising white elephant projects such as cycle lanes in Otford) but it has an unfair reputation.

To be fair I was impressed with how clean the streets are in your video. I wonder if there is a poor spiritual presence in the town. Faith brings a sense of peace, contentment and hope to an environment, maybe that is what leaves one with a low esteem for the place.

have a picnic and hire a boat on the lake or there might be a mid summer evening of classical music and fireworks
Or maybe the twice a week market
take advantage of the new sports centre or a couple of high tec gyms
moto cross at Canada heights Brands hatch not far away .
WASPS rugby are planning build a stadium
you can get a train from London bridge in 18 mins goes both ways
i know of a cocktail bar couple of ball rooms for large events a micro pub
main pub is now a friendly place to start

many new builds replacing ugly buildings
KFC Subway Morely's Dominos and many new comers
and there no mugs

people are friendly i agree in the past it was a shit hole
now Swanley is where its at

37 years spent in swanley. You dont see any criminal damage because you have stuck to the town centre, literally about 200 meters in length, yes its clean because there are regular police in the center. If you venture out of that 200 meters, you would have probably been robbed. The reason for this is because the local council try to sell massively over priced housing, and the estate agents only show the budding home owners the center. Everything out of that little 200 meter square is an absolute shit hole. Full on apocalypse movie set. Swanley is a cursed town. They say no one who stays their leaves, and if you do, you will allways end up back in swanley. The local council is horrendously corrupt, to the point where its own chairman is a well-known drug dealer.
