Why NOT pay in Rubles? Instead of paying for the gas directly in Euros, go to the Russian central bank, exchange the Euros for Rubles, and use them to pay for the gas. Simple!

Russia never threatened anyone on gas. He sees the inflation of the US dollar and doesn't want to touch it. This is no different than OPEC demanding all oil sales be in USD. It's Russia's gas and they want Russian currency for it. That's their choice, not ours or the UNs.
