How to use Quizlet Live (For ESL students)

Quizlet Live is a classroom favorite from elementary school up through continuing education. But when English isn’t the students’ first language, running a Quizlet Live game can be a little more challenging.

In this video, Quizlet contributor Kevin Chan from Azusa Pacific University shares best practices for using Quizlet Live with ESL students, including general tips for accessibility and ESL accommodations. He also demonstrates how he uses language input to encourage his students during a Quizlet Live game.

Accessibility

You are the person most responsible for the accessibility of your Quizlet Live game. Customer service is important, and it’s vital to give your students many different options to access the game and get online, especially now that everything is remote.

Accommodations

In addition to providing the game link in your class chat, make sure your students have ample time to access the game. They’ll need more time the first time you run a game. Once everyone is in, take a photo of all the student names and their animal team names. That way you can monitor who is succeeding and who needs encouragement while you’re running the game.

Provide excellent, clear instructions at the beginning, encouragement and reminders during gameplay, and descriptive praise at the end to help build connections.

How to set up Quizlet Live

Click on one of your Quizlet sets to use for your Quizlet Live game. Choose a set that includes vocabulary words and pictures of the items. Make the definition the answer, so that the image is the “question.” Create the game, then start it.

While your students are playing, be sure to give lots of verbal language input. It’s important to be verbally encouraging. Kevin says he ends up calling the game like a sports announcer, sometimes giving directions and instructions.
