"I stayed with nuns a lot while growing up, and it was while asleep in the monastery that I had a lot of dreams — some of which I remember being quite sexual and foreshadowing of a life and world I couldn’t even imagine — glimmers of a life very much like the one I inhabit now. I loved the nuns and the devotion and peace they showed me. I thought I might become a nun myself for a while. I helped take care of the goats and painted egg tempera icons. I remember, while working, I could feel a cheeky and powerful pull growing inside me. Growing up in rural Romania as an Orthodox boy I had eventually figured out that I did not fit into the dogma. I was not the most religious, but enough to create a clash between faith and identity. Faith and hope of living a life free of fear. For me, hope was the one that made me feel like life was worth living, because it promised me that I will not suffer in the very end for simply being who I am. Converting to hope is an arduous journey, and I still need time to complete unraveling my own inner intolerance. Faith can consume hope.
