Pleased to see you guys grow Spirea japonica. I think that depends on the weather. Anyway in my place(South Korea near Japan), I prune Spirea japonica more that twice a year.(Actually I don't care about the time) 1/3 is o.k and a half is also no problem. Spiraea japonica is a very strong plant. I have seen Spiraea japonica grown as a border.(It means the gardener does heavy pruning.) Don't be afraid of pruning Spirea japonica. You can get thick branches next year.

Hi! Wondering if you can help me out - I have a beautyberry and a deutzia that are both very similar in shape. They got very wildly unkempt this last season so I was looking to rejuvenation prune them to keep their shape more controlled. Am I able to hard cut them back (like all the way to the ground) in late winter (now)? If not, what’s the best way to manage their tangled and messy shape?

I just cut mine back by 2/3, snow crushed it and It was getting out of control. Your right it will pop right back. Pretty resilient.
