SOURCE :
DESCRIPTION:
The number of people displaced by disasters rose by 40% in 2022 than the year before according to *The Global Report on Internal Displacement 2023 (GRID-2023), (32.6 million people)
*The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre’s flagship annual report published May 11, 2023
An internally displaced person is someone who is forced to leave their home because of factors like war, conflict or natural/manmade disasters for instance.
The commonality between countries that report a large number of internally displaced people is that they are all thickly populated with a high number in vulnerable populations.
Pakistan 8.16 million
Philippines 5.44 million
China 3.63 million
India 2.5 million
Nigeria 2.4 million
“There are people displaced by disasters who remain for weeks, months and years sometimes. The issue is that there is little data available to actually say how long they are displaced for and in which conditions. The data this year shows that the number is higher than that of people displaced due to conflict and violence. 98% of the figure is caused by weather related events.”
The GRID-2023 attributes the increase in weather-related disasters, particularly, to the three-year-long La Niña which caused widespread disasters across the world. (71.1 million internally displaced worldwide)
In 2018 (*when IDMC started monitoring disaster flows), some 1.6 million people displaced by disasters were still in camps or places away from their homes. By 2021, 30.7 million new displacements were due to disasters
“Disaster related displacement is a global phenomenon, recorded in 150 countries and territories this year around the world. It is probably affecting every country- we just don’t have data for some of them. A lot of the figures related to disaster displacement this year are related to monsoon floods in Pakistan, storm/flood related disasters in Asia and the Pacific. We also faced unprecedented levels of drought related displacement in other countries - Somalia for instance recorded really high levels”
.“ Many countries facing this type of displacement are also affected by other crises - like crises linked with food insecurity or conflict and violence. So it is important to take these overlapping factors into account while proposing solutions for affected people.”
In 2022, displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa (16.5 million) is attributed to the three-fold increase in disaster displacements.
The East Asia and the Pacific region recorded less than average displacement due to disasters (around 10.1 million displacements in 2022 in comparison to 13.7 million in 2021.)
In South Asia (12.5 million disaster displacements were recorded in 2022) the number is double the annual average of 6.3 million (past decade average) for the region.
Floods accounted for 90 per cent of the region’s total disaster displacements. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh were the most affected.
Both food security and internal displacement levels have reached unprecedented highs in 2022. They had reached highs in the year before and also the year before that. It tells us that the approaches we have been using till now are not sustainable. We cannot go on reporting higher figures year after year. We need to take a different look at these issues together. Disaster issues often overlap with other issues like food insecurity which is the focus of this year’s report.
