@Silhouette93 Yes you are right but still.. In a topological space you can use Neighborhoods which is equivalent to "open balls" in a metric space.

Am I right in saying that the use of open balls for a basis only works for metric topologies because there is no sense of distance to define the open balls on in non metric topologies?

I would not recommend using union symbols and also denoting your open sets by the letter U. They look the same and it’s very confusing to distinguish between the two
