Urine has been used in the tanning of leather in the US and Europe. People were paid a penny a bucket. That's where the saying "He's so poor he doesn't have a pot to piss in."

Terrific. I saw the exhibition in Chicago, but it could not compare to what you showed on film.

No, I understand it was less than a thousand who escaped on one ship, who wanted to take on more but couldn’t because the eruption had increased to a level that threatened to sink or burn it. When I was 14 I read the transcript of an original eyewitness account written by someone who managed to get on the ship. The ship stayed as near as it could hoping to have another opportunity to come in close enough to save others.

My most startling impression of my visit to Pompei was the pictures on top of the door of the house of prostitution. They were very open sexually

I'm pretty sure the people ate meat, eggs, and fish. We always have. And they would have contributed to their good dental health, as well as giving them the protein and fat they would have needed for good health in general.

And on the other side of the mountain, Herculaneum was covered in ash. Pompeii burned and Herculaneum suffocated. I’ve have been in both places. Pompeii feels dead and Herculaneum feels alive.
