If there is no doubt great acoustics can enhance the quality of a musical experience, a good performance cannot occur without the use of a great instrument. That is why we have the chance to witness the highly sensitive and famous pianist Glenn Gould headed to the Steinway & Sons piano shop on New-York's 57th street to choose a new companion for his upcoming recording sessions and concert.

A joyful clip extracted from the short documentary "Glenn Gould - Off the Record" directed by Wolf Koening and Roman Kroitor in 1959.

Original documentary by National Film Broad Production, presented by the CBC.

I think it is lovely how he uses HIS chair and not a different one hahaha

First time I’m seeing Gould this happy and lively. Perhaps because he’s surrounded by pianos, or maybe I just did not know him enough:)

At 1:00, he almost sits on a regular piano stool. Almost. lol But telepathically, his chair was screaming "STOP! NO flirting with other chairs!"

I selected my 1996 Corolla, last year, with Gould’s selection demeanor at a used car dealership in Scranton, PA…

He was truly a left-handed genius, and an ambassador for all people with their brain wired for the left hand. These people are taking him lightly they do not know they are in the presence of a giant.

He was fucking stylish! The hair, the fit of the shirt and pants! Inmaculate style!

Even the way he wipes his eyes at 1:46 is reminiscent of his fantastic finger-tapping technique. Try to do that with your knuckles... not easy. Look at how protuberant and boney yet relaxed his knuckles look- a structure that you can balance your arm on. That's one of the keys to piano technique.

And to think if he was still alive he'd only be in his 80's...

Glenn Gould looks 16 years old here. Steinway : Which piano do you want? Gould: None, I'll buy that chair!!

Yo tuve un hermano arreglador de piano se le decía, ni idea cómo se diga ahora, afinador o como sea.
Ésto me recordó aquello.

Cómo no se inglés interpreto.
Me hago idea como se suele decir.

De lo que si sé es que admiro al pianista y amo la música de Bethoven.

Everyone is strained because of the camera. They knew everyone would be watching them on youtube for all time.

Gould was born with a rare sensitivity to sound." I don't know if I have any sensitivity to sound beyond when my neighbors crank the bass too loud, but the differences between those two pianos was pretty apparent to me. The one he rejected sounded like the Mafia was hiding a corpse in it.

Wonder if they gave him a discount on account of not needing a bench...😂
