The business world is witnessing a transformation in how the Internet of Things and augmented reality are leveraged in the enterprise space. PTC is a catalyst behind these changes, taking a fresh look at the “things” of the Internet of Things and finding ways to bring connectivity to product and service lifecycles for designers, manufacturers, technicians and users.

“Augmented reality is approaching a tipping point in the enterprise,” explains Michael Campbell, executive vice president of Vuforia Studio. “The combination of the IoT and augmented reality, and the combination of all of the enterprise systems that PTC can help companies integrate with AR, bring us to the point where there is the right content to put in context in augmented reality.”

One company that’s reaping the benefits is the motorcycle manufacturer KTM, where engineering has been streamlined using augmented reality.

“Years ago, they had these massive manuals, a couple of hundred pages, and to be honest with you, nobody wanted to read them,” says Jens Tuma, KTM’s head of customer service. “They would like to see the right information when they have a problem, and AR really helps to speed up those procedures.”

Tuong Nguyen, principal analyst at Gartner, Inc., credits Vuforia for driving further innovation.

“Vuforia provides one of the key components of making augmented reality viable, in the sense that it provides applications and hardware with the ability to see,” Nguyen says.
