Fun Fact: It was too expensive to maintain and keep running so that was also a factor to shutting it down. The fog elements and salt water in the air were too much for the prison pretty much.

I am from Donalsonville, GA, where the Anglin brothers were originally from. It is common knowledge in the area, that they did survive and eventually made it back to Donalsonville to visit their mother one time. Just thought I would share!

Alcatraz was one of the few prisons that had hot water for showers. The reason being that since the water in the San Francisco bay was freezing cold, if an inmate tried to swim away, their bodies would not be used to the drastic change in temperature. Most likely leading to shock in the body.

It's belived that at least the Anglin brothers survived the escape and fled to South America. A national geografic documentary uncovered a photo of two men who looked a lot like them.

If you ever get the chance to visit Alcatraz, I highly encourage you to do so. It is a life changing experience. Yes, this prison housed some very dangerous criminals, but it also housed men who stole a loaf of bread. I was blown away by the stories I heard on the tour. I even got to meet one of the prisoners who was locked up there many years ago (probably one of the last alive.) It was a very sobering and somber experience, and I recommend it to everyone.
