Six Things ALL New Road Bikes Should Have! | The Perfect Road Bike?!

Over the past year we've seen some bike makers step backwards in the technology that they're building into their bikes. However, we think that it could be taken another step further. We don't think anyone would ever complain about having a threaded bottom bracket, a 27.2 seatpost and a bar and stem which is easily adjustable and interchangeable should the desire strike them. In theory, the things listed in this video should actually be seen as upgrades as current bike tech can be slightly temperamental.

00:00 - Intro
00:25 - Gloss Paint
01:27 - Conventional Bar & Stem
02:37 - Integration... To An Extent
03:36 - 27.2 Seatposts
05:18 - Threaded Bottom Brackets
05:53 - 4mm Bolt Heads
06:36 - Outro

Hi, please don't engage with any message that purports to be from Cycling Weekly on Telegram offering a prize or surprise. It isn't us!

The presenter and I agree on this list (save I would leave out integrated cables altogether), but I would add one thing that's even more important and that every bike sold should come with: a level of quality control commensurate with the price. To be clear, this should not be based on the cost to the maker, but on the selling price.

This video made my day! I have an older frame, circa 2014, that I am in no rush to replace because of all this integration that’s being pushed by the industry!

agree on most of those, some of those things i have never had, integrated stem bars with cables routed through, and as i do almost all my own maintenance, which i hate, i want things to not take longer and be more complicated. the newest advancement on one of my bikes was a set of cable disk brakes, that is as complicated as i want to go, 2 bikes are still rim brakes. And well all those pro level integrated hidden 4mm, cable routed.. how many pro's do you see maintaining their own bikes during a grand tour? like eh i want to be able to do it myself in a reasonable amount of time without having to take the afternoon off and drive to the nearest bike shop 30 miles away. and I have no intention of switching to digital gears. This is why i still love my LOOK 585, gloss paint, standard bar and stem, 27.2 post, threaded BB, 4mm bolts, currently 6.85kg with Sram Red, and sweet FA integration = easy maintenance, just the way i like it.

Let's get rid of the matte !!

Mudguards should be standard. If you don't want them in the summer, they can be removed but come the wet weather you'll have an effective set ready to fit back on. With the gloss paint they could provide a small touch up paint.

I agree with everything you would add rim brakes to the last. No squeaks and pads that last years. (and no fear of getting a little oil on them)

Great list with well explained reasoning. I agree with most of it. So many lists have a "content" feel but this one addresses real life considerations.

Totally with you on threaded bottom brackets.

Id rather see better QC than threaded bottom brackets, if you get the tolerances right theres no problem with press fit. Bolt should all be torqs solves so many issues.

I like the trend towards pragmatic design. Of course I am an extremist on this point. I think the peak of bike design (for the non competitive) is the 80-90s steel MTB with upgraded parts.

Include a standard derailleur hanger to that list please

I wholeheartedly agree on all items on this list. Recreational cycling should be simple and enjoyable. Leave the unnecessary headaches to the pros and their mechanics, who get paid for this.

BSA bb, standard 1 1/8th headset, quick release skewers, mechanical shifting, traditional stem and bars, and most importantly rim brakes.

Great video, I couldn't agree more on all of these. I cannot wait until they stop putting fully internal cables on lower to mid end bikes.

I'm with you on all of your choices. Perhaps I am too old, but I get the idea that some bike manufacturers have developed ADHD in regard to bike standards. To them it seems any standard exists in order to be broken. But often, the "standard" or "customary" approach is that way because it works best.

Agree and shall I shout it out for you ? keep the Rim Brakes !! :) there just fine and dandy

10 speed, rim brakes on Mavic Open Pro or Ambrosio Excelight (if you are not too heavy) rims, is all you need for most things. Bike tech nowadays is a heap of solutions looking for problems at the customers' expense and the manufacturers' profit.

Fully agree with all the points, especially in the ones related to integrated cockpit vs stem&handlebar, and integrated cabling! Good video!!
