Is the Nikon D40 still a good camera in 2024?

Yes. Is it still a capable camera? Yes. Is it the cheapest Nikon DSLR? Maybe.
This video is dedicated to the Nikon D40 and classic DSLR photographers! It was my first camera and the colors from it are absolutely amazing thanks to it's CCD sensor.

Do you have one? If so, leave a comment!

Hello! I just inherited a D40 and your video was the first one I've watched and loved all the info you provide and the format you did it in! I am subscribing to your channel and look forward to future videos you put out! Happy New Year!!

I finally grabbed a D40 recently to add to my collection. The main reason I chose it is the flash sync speed. Even though it's stated to sync at 1/500th, with Pocket Wizards and shooting with flashes in non TTL modes, I've gotten it to sync at 1/1250. 📸👍📸

Got mine in 2006 or 2007. Paired it with a 28-105mm Nikkor. Ran it for about 5 years. You can change the menu theme color which was pretty cool back then. I think a D90 would be a better semi retro set up as it has more lens compatability.

thank you. great video... taught me so much. found a D40 with a few extras for $175 and am very seriously thinking on buying it now that I watched your video. found a telephoto lense for $125. that I am considering as well... for a real beginner to photography using a real camera... I am excited to get started. (using the cell phone just is not the same)

About to purchase a D40. I was a professional photographer in film, but digital overtook me. Having watched this the D40 seems right for me. In the past people asked what camera to buy their kids and I would suggest the Practika MTL5. It was an old camera but you learned how the camera worked, I’m hoping the D40 is the digital version of the Practika. Loved Nikon had the F5 when it was hot off the press great camera.

BoostLeekd Media my Nikon D40 maxes out at 32gig cards. which is what i put in my two D40s . I keep mine in the car with a 18-200mm lens . So i always have DSLR available. Keep up the good work.

I have a 2006 D80 with a kit zoom. I like it a lot. Been thinking about full frame D600 as an additional camera. I was quite proficient using a 35mm Nikon FM SLR and made a bit of money doing the odd wedding, christening and publicity shoot. I have not felt the same passion about digital for some reason even though I do know my way around computers. Thanks for another great video. I kept my Nikon FM too.

You should make a collection video going through all of your equipment

Have a D40x sine new, and got a D40 for 35 bucks a while ago, with kit lenses. Also a zoom 10-300 an a few vintage lenses. I think these cameras are as close as you can get to analog photography on a budget. They are great to learn on, you get a bunch of limitations that makes you think about what you are doing, but when you get things right, you will get a very nice result direct from the files. The CCD demands less post processing than CMOS, imo. Strengths, portrait, street and landscape in good weather, weaknesses bad lighting, long lenses, bulky to use in full manual mode. I’m thinking of getting a 35 mm lens for street, the kit lens is surprisingly good, but slow, and I like bokeh.

Recently got it from family member, I don't know when and from where that member got it. Spent last day researching the model as there was no manual, no card nothing.I am planning using it for photogrammetry so lets see how it performs. Last time I was holding "pro" camera was in the high school some 8-10 years ago so yeah looking forward to it.

Interesting story.

I shot a wedding and had no second shooter for that day/night. (All day event). I was doing the heavy lifting with my D700's (Or so I thought) So I had my wife grab our 'family D40, and we put a black strip of tape over the model number because of the 'arm chair photographers" that ALWAYS are mixed in with the families and quests. They always want to know what the "pro" is using. (You KNOW there's always several that show up).

My wife was turned loose with our 'family' D40 during the whole event with the goal of handling the "photojournalistic/candid's and she shot the hell out of that camera. We didn't expect much from this little camera as a pro tool, but she surprised us both, by being a pretty good shooter/composer and actually landed quite a few artistic shots.

What blew us BOTH away was that there were tons of shots that she got with that camera that were keepers. Thankfully, we were only supplying digital as they had no desire to print past 8 X 10's (if at all). With the simplicity and limits in focusing, and with her limited "science of photography", she came off like a pro with a more capable tool.

Bottom line, she did as good of a job with that little D40 as any second shooter that I would normally want to have, and to the real point, that D40 DID THE JOB.

It's not something I'd recommend for normal wedding shooting, but it DID come through.
