I've never EVER been out hiking and thought I was in a race type environment. I hike often in Scotland solo and meet different people all the time, male and female. I've never even considered that anyone is hiking with the intention of being faster than someone. She has completely misread what hiking is and why people do it. If you're racing then you couldn't stop and have a mug of tea and read a book. Also, I've never thought of hiking as a male dominated activity. You meet all types of people, from older ladies to young kids.
