As others mentioned:
- Only in pro editions
- Unsafe programs can sometimes break through sandboxes, although rare

These do work well, but I suggest virtualbox still!! You can download any common os iso file and run it as if it were native. Plus you can gauge how much memory, how much cpu, Gpu, etc. the machine uses for the vm. Really good for testing sketchy apps or using non windows software with a pc in windows.

Be sure to check if virtualization is enabled in the bios or not. You can check in the task manager > performance

Well you may also have to turn on virtualization in your bios, though. It's on by default almost modern systems, a few other windows subsystems use it too I believe.

Just use *Sandboxie* instead.

Not only it's safer _(and free, ofc), _ it also won't hoard up the system resources.
And it's much more handy, as the apps/games will look like they're launched normally _(with a colored window border and/or an added text of your choosing to the window's header)_ instead of a hideous window-inside-a-window thing.

And you can extract/add files to the sandboxed app/game - as the sandbox working folder is just a regular Explorer folder *for the end user* _(apps/games will still think that the whole system drive is at their disposal)._
In other words, you can install a potential adware app/game, take out the clean files, and just clear the sandbox afterwards _(wiping all the files in the sandbox)_ - w/o having to worry about cluttering the registry and/or system folders with that shady installation.
And, ofc, you can easily test which files/folders and/or registry is created/altered after launching that app/game, to define whether it's safe or not - which is, basically, the sheer purpose of the sandbox environment in the first place.

Not an ad - just been using it for many years.

**This only works if you have the pro version of windows 10 or 11.**

*THIS IS A TEST*

Yeah that's cool to know except for the fact that there are programs that can detect if they're in a sandbox so they breach the safety net and infect your computer anyway. Pro tip just don't actually get involved with this stuff unless you know what you're doing.

Your processor and motherboard need to support virtualization in the bios. You will most likely need to turn that on. You will also need to be on the pro version fyi

Its usually meant for developers to use as a test environment for build and deployment processes so they know the software theyre shipping works on a fresh instance of windows and not just their own system which likely has many additional packages and programs installed that may be necessary to include with the software. Rather than to "test sketchy programs"

This is a great tip. The only caveat is if you normally use around 50% of available RAM, Sandbox will grab a few gigs to run that virtual machine. I keep it closed and take the extra 30 seconds to start it only when needed and then off it goes again.

That’s cool. Up until now I always used a separate freeware called Sandboxie. But now I will run that, within the windows native one and I’ll be doubly protected. Thanks for the tip

This isn't necessarily a safe place to test potential malware.

Please be careful when testing sketchy programs in Windows Sandbox, or any virtual machine application. While it is relatively rare, depending on the virus, it can:

A: Infect your main computer (Host)
B: Can spread to other devices through your network/wifi
