US Congress votes for gold medal for Frank Sinatra :
Washington, April 30: Singer Frank Sinatra, who 30 years ago appeared before Congress to deny links with organised crime, on Tuesday was voted to receive a Congressional gold medal.
The House of Representatives cleared the Bill for President Bill Clinton on a voice vote. The Senate passed the legislation in February. New York Democrat Jose Serrano, the chief sponsor of the Bill, said he became a fan after learning to speak English as a child in Puerto Rico by listening to Sinatra's records.
"It is my way of saying thank you' to this individual who brought so much joy to the world with his talent, " said Mr Serrano. He said he had 290 Sinatra records. "Frank Sinatra is perhaps the greatest singer of popular American music of this century, " added Representative Mike Castle, a Delaware Republican.
Sinatra's daughter, Nancy said Sinatra watched the debate with family members on television and was "in tears" after the Bill passed. "Today, as a proud American, Congress may have brough a tear to my eyes, but that lofty institution has also made me very, very happy, " he said.(AFP)
