🇨🇳 CHINA vs SERBIA 🇷🇸 | Highlights | Women's VNL 2024. Team China wrapped up their campaign in the first phase of the 2024 Women's Nations League in Brazil with a 3-1 run on Saturday, recovering from a set down to move past Serbia 3-1.
After going into the Brazil leg as world No.6, the Chinese players slipped to seventh after conceding a loss to Canada a day ago, which was particularly costly in a tournament that also serves as an Olympic qualifier. With Saturday's victory, China gained 8.42 points from four matches played and climbed back to sixth. They beat South Korea in straight sets and the USA 3-1 in their first two matches in Rio.
As the top five teams in the FIVB standings have already secured their berths for Paris, the Chinese players are currently in top spot in the qualifying process ahead of the next two legs, where they will play at home in the Macao and Hong Kong special administrative regions to earn one of the last four Olympic tickets on offer based on ranking.
Already in the Paris draw, Rio Olympics runners-up Serbia did not feature some of their franchise players such as Tijana Boskovic in the line-up in Brazil. Serbia's Ana Bjelica, who played in the Chinese Volleyball Super League in the 2020-21 season, scored a team-high of 10 points in the first set to put her side ahead 25-21. China went in front 8-3 in the second set, and stayed ahead to level the match with a 25-15 win. China went on to take the third 25-18 with power serves, and eased to victory in the fourth with another 25-18 win.
Grouped with the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand and Italy, China will start the second phase of the event in the Macao Special Administrative Region on May 29.
