Epidemic of Lockdown Puppies Getting Abandoned

People who hate dogs are absolute trash. John Iadarola and Yasmin Khan break it down on The Damage Report.

"Britain's lockdown dogs are still only puppies - but they are already being abandoned as owners find they can't afford them or don't have time for them, animal shelters say.

One charity founder says she is seeing a huge boost in puppies being surrendered, as owners give up the pets they bought during the lockdown dog boom.

Becky Mosley took in a dog at her North Lincolnshire rehoming charity who became poorly with a deadly infection after its owner attempted to force her to breed with her brother."*

I work in an animal shelter and we’ve had a HUGE increase in animals coming into the shelter in the last week. Since last summer when the shelter was completely clean of adoptable animals, we haven’t had anything that resembles even half of what our regular population is. The huge spike is keeping us very busy. A lot of our volunteers haven’t come back yet because covid is still a thing and a lot of our volunteers are retirees. What I will say is that giving your animal to a shelter or a rescue is WAY better than abandoning it on the street! For these guys, we’ll stay busy, we don’t mind.

Sad. I made my boys watch 3 seasons of Dog Whisperer before we got a dog. Did a lot of research and looking. Was a 6 month process.

She is 15 years old now, and the best dog ever.

Animals are not toys.

We lost our oldest dog about 3 years ago and the second oldest one just died this morning. They were 12 and 13 years old. I could never imagine giving any of my babies up

We adopted a lockdown dog . He is the perfect addition to our family. His first family worked hard to find him a great new home . They just weren’t able to mix the new pup with their older dog . We keep in touch .

That’s so crazy. I love my pandemic dog!!! She’s a member of our family!

This is upsetting to me, a 50+ year old man who has NEVER owned a dog, even though nothing would make me happier. I even have my favorite breeds narrowed down to the final few for when I finally do get one, but my lifestyle simply would not be fair to any dog, so I made that conscious decision. GD it some people piss me off!

I was looking to adopt a shelter dog last summer. It wasn't because of the pandemic, but that was when I was looking, and you had to enter a lottery just to adopt a shelter dog. That's how big the demand was. I ended up getting brother and sister chocolate lab puppies from a breeder and I couldn't imagine giving them up for anything.

I took in two cats just before the first lockdown because their owner had to move to a pet free apartment. He couldn’t get them into a shelter as there was a waiting list They are part of my household now and have a home for life

Never trust a person who hates dogs & children ...

What kind of monster gets a poor defenseless puppy to make themselves feel happy but when the puppy needs them they just abandon them. That's truly disgusting.

I'm one of the pandemic adopters... But I'd wanted my own dog for years, knew what I was getting into thanks to growing up with dogs as well as dogsitting for neighbors, and chose to do it now because my hours as a part time retail employee went up so I could budget for the big initial expense of adopting a dog.

Never. Ever. Ever. Impulse adopt a pet. Tellingly, a lot of good rescue agencies put you through a light version of what it's like to adopt a kid, because they want the animal to go to a good home with people who know how to take care of the animal and are willing to make a years-long commitment

Adult dogs also need homes. Older dogs especially need homes. There are also breed specific rescue groups where you can adopt dogs. My family has adopted several adult dogs over the years. Everyone gave us love and left us hilarious memories after they passed away.

I've never owned a dog because I am not sure I can handle the commitment. I've owned cats, and of course never abandoned them.

I’m sitting here, petting “Demi” the PanDemiC Puppy. She my four month old fur baby. We are working on separation anxiety as I go back to campus to teach. I could never abandon her or my older dog, Sweet Pea. They are family.

Let’s not exclude breeders taken advantage to the surge....

I work in dog industry and there was an EXPLOSION of new puppies coming in a few months into the pandemic. I unfortunately saw this coming.

Spending more time at home COULD be a good chance to raise a new dog but people treat dogs as fashion objects. Some want silent tiny fluffy dogs that wear clothes and bows. The other half want big scary dogs that act like military robots.

People gets dogs to fuel their own ego and get rid of them when no longer convenient for them. Disgusting.

What I will never understand is how people can dump an animal that loves them? My sister got her pit bull because someone dumped her in the middle of the wilderness. My sister lives in a really remote place, the closest town has about 500 people. Someone just dumped this dog miles and miles away from civilization. My sister was going to take this dog to the local shelter and was warned by the people that ran it that this dog would be put down within 48 hours. So my sister kept the dog, that was 6 yrs ago. I rescued my dog 2 years ago. I can't imagine doing anything like that to her. I love this little creature with my entire heart.

I used to work at an animal shelter and people would give up their pets for the dumbest reasons. My main issue were parents that gave up pets because they were having a baby, and they thought something might happen between the pet and their baby. They wouldn’t even give it a chance to see how they interacted. I could understand if the pet had territorial issues, but most of the time, that was not a factor. It was like the pet just didn’t matter anymore. 😟

I adopted a little Chihuahua mix last October, mostly because I wanted another dog. She's the smartest dog I've ever owned, and a real sweetheart. Now I have two. I'm not giving either up for anything.
