Canadians pay more in 'carbon tax' than they get back in rebates, Conservatives claim

Speaking during Monday's question period in the House of Commons in Ottawa, Conservative MP Andrew Scheer proclaimed that Canadians pay more in the so-called "carbon tax" than they receive back in climate incentive rebates.

Scheer added that the carbon pricing will add more pressure on Canadians, many of whom struggle to afford food.

Liberal Treasury Board president Anita Anand replied that Conservatives deny the existence of climate change, as they pressure her party to "axe the tax" amid an upcoming rise in carbon pricing on April 1.

"Note that the Opposition does not rebut the claim that they deny that climate change exists," Anand said during question period.

"The operation was a success, but the patient died."
This is a perfect description of the Liberal carbon tax scheme. Tax and spend is the only tool in the toolbox of the Liberals and NDP. Federal election now, Justin!

There is no way for the carbon tax to be revenue neutral AND be able to give back to Canadians as much as they put in. Just the cost of administration is going to peel off a large chunk.

I'd rather the Canadian Liberal government not "be there" for Canadians any longer.😅

They obfuscate the amount of carbon taxes you pay from your receipts so you can't calculate it yourself. Just a big slush fund.

Today I spoke to 5 Provence’s Tax departments help lines, just to get an answer on where to send a death benefit check back to, as my wife is deceased and her bank account has been closed since August 2023.
Finally I got an Answer from the Edmonton CRA. Time spent, from 8:30 AM to 3: 30 PM today.
Every person I spoke to was a non Canadian I could barely understand, except for the Person in Edmonton, who gave me the correct answer, he was Canadian. So how much money have we spent across Canada on the CRA, CPP and OAS, could you ask Trudeau in the House how much money CRA has wasted.
I went from I went from Newfoundland to Ontario to Manitoba to Victoria BC, and finally to Edmonton to get my answer. How is that possible??? Note the Cheque was made out in the name of Dead Person, I’m the one that incurred the funeral expense, why wasn’t the Cheque made out to me, her spouse, since we have been retired we have been doing joint Taxes, I notified them in Aug 2023 of he death.

Did anyone believe a tax put more money in your pocket?

why does anyone even care about this rebate? even if it was more than you paid, the CT is payed by everyone, meaning everything built, grown, raised, harvested, manufactured, stored sold shipped or delivered has a CT on it. We all pay that CT AND the CT on our own used gas...no one factors that in because Canadians are bad at base level economics.

The carbon tax doesn't work to begin with. Citizens are being taxed for using businesses and businesses can pay a fee to continue to polute above required levels. It's a money grab that doesn't reduce carbon. Forcing industry to reduce carbon to the set levels by removing business licenses and/or levying high enough fines to offset profits sufficiently is the only way for the highest polluting country per capita to change.

Is this really a tax on your air? My Dad used to say this was early 1970s if governments could put a
Meter on your back to charge per breath they would do that' I thought it
Would always be a bad joke.?

This is always the biggest danger in any Country when the same incumbent ruling Party Government has been in power too long. I don't like some things in the U.S. system such as refusal to have Universal Healthcare like Canada has but I agree that like the President the Prime Minister should only be allowed no more than 8 Years (Two Full 4 Year Terms) in ruling power.

Even if it was infinity$/ton for 100 years it would only spare the climate of 6ppm of co2 and completely eliminate human life in Canada. Seasonal atmospheric co2 level fluctuations are approximately 6ppm. It’s unnoticeable and painfully inefficient.

Justin Trudeau acknowledged that Canada’s military is woefully short on supplies, but blamed the situation on our contributions to Ukraine.

How defence spending stacks up. According to figures from NATO, the budget for the Canadian military in 2023 is $36.7 billion or 1.29 per cent of GDP.

Okay I was about to defend the carbon tax until I heard her answer that “inflation is going down”. What does that have to do with the carbon tax? Also, saying “you don’t believe in climate change”is not an answer either. Liberals need to learn to answer the question they’re asked. Or replace the people who lack that most basic skill of governing. I do know how how the carbon tax is making a difference. But she doesn’t seem to. That’s messed up. No wonder the Conservatives are ahead in the polls, that’s just sad.
