It is not recommended to hold the keys between your fingers like "claws" or brass knuckles, because you have a big chance of hurting yourself while also not being able to hurt your attacker. Both for the reason that you can't hold the keys in the same angle when you put force into it (aka punching someone): the keys will turn in other directions, or even just push back into your hand with such force that you'll only hurt yourself. It is better to hold your keys as a knife in a "stabbing" position, it gives you much more power to hurt someone, and minimizes the risk of hurting yourself.
The same goes for another self-defense strategy that is often taught: aiming for the crotch if the attacker is male. This often fails because they have a natural reflex to protect that area, it is better to aim for the eyes with your thumbs, pressing as hard as you can (this will hurt horribly with the slightest pressure).
