Oh, thank god. All the other guides were telling me to just press the "ALT"/Option key to get into the recovery menu, which didn't work it just booted normally. This was driving me nuts. How should I know that Apple changed this starting with the M1/2 Macs.

I followed the first part of the instructions, then it went to Reset Password screen. It is a MacBook model A1534 which was my daughter's and it is password protected. She passed away 2.5 years ago. I went through Apple and successfully filed through the Legacy account and had her Apple id account deleted (per Apple tech support) and now I want to add the device to my apple account. Suggestions?
