The Netherlands has a notorious reputation for being involved in some of the most disciplined matches at the World Cup. A notable instance of this occurred during the quarter-final of the 2022 event in Qatar, where the Netherlands faced Argentina. Although Argentina emerged victorious in the penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw, it was the aggressive behavior of both teams that became the main highlight. An astonishing 18 yellow cards were issued during the match, setting a new record. The Netherlands received eight yellow cards, with Denzel Dumfries earning a red card after his second yellow. Similarly, Argentine players accumulated eight yellow cards, with their manager Lionel Scaloni and assistant Walter Samuel also receiving yellow cards, bringing their total to ten. This match underscored the intense and often contentious nature of World Cup encounters.

Here is the story of the battle of Lusail.

I will never understand how that wasn’t a red on paredes for the reckless foul and booting the ball into the bench

The Portugal-Netherlands game in 2006 was more violent because there were way more red cards but Netherlands-Argentina broke a record for most yellow cards in a football tournament.

Yes, this is the most violent recent game. How about, though, the Battle of Santiago, Chile 2 - Italy 0? June 1962 World Cup. Punches were thrown, noses were broken, spitting occurred. The police had to remove a player that was ejected from the game. The red and yellow cards were not yet in use at that time (they were introduced at the 1970 World Cup).

The bold quote of Van Gaal was not really bold at all and taken out of context. He never explicitly said Messi was Argentina's weak link. He was ASKED by a reporter if there were any PRO'S to playing against Messi. To which Van Gaal said it was a good question and that one upside is that Messi does not really defend, so when you have the ball it is like playing against 10 men. Then he ALSO said Messi, in his view, is the best attacking player in the world. Not bold. Not controversial. Just true. It's the Argentinian media that twisted his words.

That pass from LM to Molina is something exeptionally elegant in football history.
