I believe they’re meant to make the low Bb quieter and help it’s intonation. From what I’ve seen it’s primarily used by classical players who would want a better in tune note with less ‘honkiness’.

I use it for my clarinet and it reduces the sound enough that my neighbours can’t complain about the noise 😂

Saw your past video on this and this short was recommended. I think it's a little disingenuous to say sax mutes blanket DON'T work when there's an age-old trick that works fine on alto or tenor (didn't help on my straight soprano): Roll up a T-Shirt and shove it down your bell! It noticeably dampens the sound and every note above low C works fine. Not sure why you wouldn't mention that!

now put the rest of it on, the part that goes into the neck and the one for the mouthpiece.

also, you can play louder to counteract it, which can be a good thing if you want to train your ff without having the whole neighborhood knocking on your door

it’s not a mute for the overall sound, just mutes the low Bb slightly to help with tuning. lmao.

Now do the same with the other two pieces that fit in either end of the neck👍
Use the other 2 pieces together and they do reduce volume noticably. The bell piece doesnt have much of an effect

In sax mutes I've seen there's a part that attaches at the neck/mpc - I imagine that does a significant amount of noise reduction.

They might work on low Bb but other than that the air will just escape through the holes

its for the lower notes, as if its a higher note or in the staff, the sound comes out from the pads that are not covered, as for the low Bb, the only way the sound comes out is through the bell, meaning its only use is to quiet down the lowest/lower notes, hence the name. in this video you cannot call this “proof sax mutes dont work” if u didnt try to play a low Bb. at least now you know

Well the sound does not always come out of the bell it mainly come out the first open hole or any other open hole in the instrument
