On January 1st, 2020, at approximately 7:20 pm, Grantsville Utah Police officers received a dispatch concerning a suspicious persons call at a residential address. Police Dispatch informed the officers that someone had dialed 911, reporting they were taking an adult male with a leg gunshot wound to the hospital. They also notified the officers that the suspected shooter was in the same vehicle heading to the hospital and had shot four other people in the home. The subsequent bodycam footage captures the officers' initial arrival and their findings inside. Police worst fears were confirmed when they discovered four victims inside the home. Exiting the premises, officers secured the area and convened to discuss their findings. They also interviewed nearby neighbors to gather any relevant information they might have seen or heard. Following conversations with neighbors and further information gathering, it was revealed that the perpetrator behind the gruesome killings was none other than a 16-year-old male named CJ Haynie, a member of the victims' own family. Officers confirmed that CJ had traveled to the hospital in a vehicle driven by a neighbor, alongside his father, whom he had shot in the leg. Rushing to the hospital, officers apprehended CJ, and the ensuing dashcam and bodycam footage documents that pivotal moment.

These were our neighbors. They were a Mormon family with close ties to the church and community, and for some reason this story was swept under the rug. There was a big movement on social media by friends and church members to silence and shame anyone from talking about it so it's been really frustrating just trying to find out what happened. This was incredibly tragic. He threw his whole life away bc of past arguments with his dad. I feel so sorry for the father listening to him recount what just happened. Ofc I feel sorry for his wife and kids too- never realizing what would happen to them, being betrayed in that way. His whole family gone instantly. Time is so precious, always hug your loved ones- you never know when they can be taken . 😢

From local paper regarding sentencing: "Colin Haynie, Haynie's father, was present at the sentencing but declined to make a statement. Haynie's only other living family member, his older brother Danny, addressed the court via an audio call.

He explained that his family had seen "red flags" about a month prior to the incident that Haynie was having dark thoughts. His mom had asked him if he wanted to go to therapy, Danny Haynie said, and Colin Haynie refused to send his son to therapy because he "didn't want to say anything to the therapist that would make him end up in jail."

"The irony is that (Haynie) ended up in jail, and my family is dead, and for what?" Danny Haynie said. "I've lived every day seeing my family's faces in my dreams almost every night. ... It's traumatized me. It's messed me up more than anyone could ever imagine."

Danny Haynie said he feels like the murders could have been prevented, and that while CJ Haynie no longer blames his father, Danny Haynie still does because he wishes the family would have gotten him help when he needed it."
