If you don’t show any observable ‘symptoms’ of anxiety and on the surface look confident and composed, but definitely don’t feel it on the inside, you might resonate with something called ‘High Functioning Anxiety’.
Now, it’s not a diagnosable condition, but it describes anyone who seems to be ‘functioning’ well on the outside (in fact, they might be a high performer achieving all their goals), but internally is experiencing anxiety in some way.
And this anxiety could manifest in any of the following ways:
• Being a compulsive people pleaser
• Being a perfectionist
• Not being able to sleep due to a racing mind
• Overthinking constantly about the future or past
• Inability to set boundaries
• Not being able to take a break because you don’t feel you deserve it…
Interestingly, the underlying anxiety both fuels and is reinforced by these behavious. It self-perpetuates.
It’s really important if you are experiencing anxiety that you find things to do to help you manage it. Whether it’s incorporating mindfulness meditation into your days, starting regular journaling, breathing exercises or even seeking professional guidance or support, let’s normalize taking ownership of our mental wellbeing and commit to taking steps towards it.
