It's that time of the year when the City of Cape Town is transformed with glittering colourful uniforms as the Cape Town street parade (Tweede Nuwe Jaar) events kickstart the 2025 New Year. This cultural and traditional event goes back to the 19th century and will see over 20,000 performers from 18 minstrel troupes parade through the city, starting in District Six to the Bo-Kaap. To tell us more about the Annual Kaapse Klopse Competitions and the Cape Town Street Parade, we are joined virtually by Muneeb Gambeno, Director of the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association.

Historically, the event has been held on January 2nd since the mid-nineteenth century, a date chosen to commemorate the only day off the slaves received in the Cape Colony.
