Alex Assali fled Assad in Syria and ISIL in Libya. Now he runs a charity kitchen in Berlin.

Alex Assali woke up in his small Berlin flat on the morning of November 22, 2015, and checked his email. There were 1,000 messages waiting for him.
The day before, a friend had uploaded a photograph to Facebook of Assali feeding homeless people on the streets of Berlin. The caption below read: “Acts of kindness: A Syrian refugee mans a food stand for the homeless, to ‘give something back to the German people’.”
The image went viral - it was shared more than 3,000 times on Facebook and nearly three million times on Imgur. Assali, 38, had become an overnight social media sensation.
Although he had started his informal soup kitchen back in August, the photo had suddenly captured the media’s attention; news crews flocked to his flat.
But while Assali may have been swept to fame overnight, he was no accidental activist.
Over the past 11 years, Assali has had to flee two countries - Syria and Libya -after speaking out against political corruption and human rights abuses.

I have been to Syria on holiday before the civil war and the Syrian people are by far the most hospitable in have witnessed.I have travelled to about 30+ countries in total.

As a German, I can witness that real Syrians are nice and diligent people. But those coming from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Northern Africa - they just abuse the system and behave as they wish.

The guy possesses good soul but Aljazeera always fails to mention how their oil-rich gulf states did not take a single refugee while Germany welcomed 90% of them with open hearts.
Typical Sheikh hypocrisy at its best.

I wish more immigrants were just like this gentlemen right here... Then I would not vote for the conservatives, and I would not matter them coming to my country but I happen to see people everyday taking advantage of us, and I am SICK OF IT!
How dare our politicians open the borders? they are not the owners or our countries, we, the people are.

I wish nothing but the best for this dude.

Seeee! This is what AJ+ needs to be sharing, not sensational bull crap. This is why I respect AlJazeera English programming...please AJ English, teach AJ+ and AJ America a thing or two.

This Person has just as much a right to stay in Germany as the guys at Cologne and the dozens who have behaved like them elsewhere. This is what you get with "no human is illegal" and an ope door to anybody with two legs and no papers.

He is not a muslim He is a Christian porbably Assyrian Christian. Look at 0:17 closely. On the board it says "helping others is a Christian Syrian Thing". He's the true refugee from Syria because the true refugees who are being persecuted are Christians not muslims.

This is a start but is only a beginning in his repayment process. How much has he taken? How much has he given back?
