Math is so much more creative and imaginative than we give it credit for!
When I hear my students express their ways of seeing math, it opens our minds so much
Thanks Howie!

I use jigsaw puzzles as an example of a process. Some people start at the corners, or the edges or even a color. The secret to learning math is finding a teacher who solves puzzles the same way you do. Sometimes a student who starts with the corners has a teacher who thinks you should only start with a color & makes you feel stupid if you dont get it. Which can them cause you to shut down & give up on math. Math needs to be presented as a fun puzzle to be solved, not just numbers to be manipulated.
LOVE your videos!

How I counted the dots: I saw groups of 5, overlapping in the middle. So I focused on the left-hand side first: 5 on top + 5 on bottom = 10. That leaves 2 groups of 3 on the right hand side (10+3+3 = 10+6 = 16)

I pictured 4 dice showing 5's. This gives 20. I then subtracted four(the ones down the middle) because I counted them TWICE! See? Answer: 20 - 4 = 16. Voila! Old man Rob, Canada
