The project is called “Empowerment: The Children’s Zero Waste Climate Quilt Project” coordinated by artist Danielle Baudrand with the help of other artists and educators. The goal is to make quilts using the Zero Waste Approach and give students a chance to voice their opinions and views about climate change by dissecting their own daily habits of consumption and looking at how to become more mindful. The project uses repurposed cardboard (from things like cereal or cracker boxes), plastic packaging and other debris in addition to reused art supplies donated by community members. Children create quilt squares from the cardboard, and then the squares are sewn together using strips cut from plastic packaging. The quilts have been on display in galleries, museums, schools and statehouses. Everyone is welcome to join!
