We had a magpie fall down our chimney into the dining room while we were at work. When we got back we found the poor bird exhausted after trying to escape the attentions of our cat. We caught the poor thing in a tea towel and set it out on the lawn with some water. Immediately, about 6 magpies appeared and surrounded their injured pal, protecting it and bringing it food until it was strong enough to fly again. A very touching spectacle.

In 1983, when on my motorcycle, I was saddened by the sight of a run over magpie that had been flattened by traffic and of having seen its mate constantly flying down to it, whilst dodging oncoming vehicles. Many years later, I used to feed many birds at my mother's house {now sold} and they all knew me by my shape as I walked out of the conservatory to place food along the garden wall. The pair of magpies flew over from the tree in the back garden of the house opposite and jackdaws and gulls came down from all directions. It was like a scene from the Hitchcock film. Now, I can only throw food up onto my garage roof, where birds can't see me but they waste no time in diving down for it from the high roofed flats opposite.

Lovely birds. I enjoy seeing them frolicking in the field where I walk my dogs. I often have them visiting my bird food table in my garden too. They look at you so inquisitively, they really look intelligent 💕 Great video once again Liam 😊

Thank you Liam! Magpies are so fascinating that I'm sure you could produce an hour-long video on their behaviour and biology and still not run out of material. It's great to see them getting some love.

I have a pair of magpies nesting in the big elderberry tree just outside my back door, second year running they've had their nest there, probably because I put food out for them each day. Not sure if the egg is hatched yet but they are very attentive, one comes out for food while the mate watches the nest. They sure are intelligent birds, I spend ages watching them swooping down after other birds, trying to keep all the food for themselves.

I had a raised magpie as child. Vivien I called her. Lived 11 years. She was family. I now have two pigeons, both chick (squab) age raised. One Columbus rock dove and one wood. Jim and Frankie.

A couple of years ago while walking my dog, he stopped to smell something. Wmhile I was waiting for him to move off, a magpie came and landed on a wall about a foot away from me. It wasn't the slightest bit afraid of me, just seemed very curious, did the head on one side thing. I chatted withbit a while, rather a one-sided conversation to be honest, before it flew away. Beautiful bird.

Great video Liam. I was watching a pair of magpies gather twigs from a plum tree in our front garden recently. Nesting season is well underway.

Fascinating birds. And far more intelligent than what we give them credit for.

Thanks so much for this, I love magpies and we have several around our area, I found one frozen to our carport roof a few years ago but still alive. Took it in and warmed it up and it recovered and wanted to fly so let it out and off it went. Fabulous creatures but seem so scared of humans and fly off as soon as they see you anywhere near them.

Thanks for this Liam. I have witnessed magpies mourning the death of a magpie. There were many pairs of magpies where I used to live and when one died they all came to it, not just it's mate, as if to bid it farewell. It was quite touching to see.
