The VAR Review | October 2024

The VAR Review is a monthly show that gives Scottish football fans a behind the scenes look at some of the big decisions made across the game – whether they are right or whether they are wrong – and how those decisions are reached. Get unique insight through the use of VAR and referee audio.

Host Gordon Duncan is joined by Head of Refereeing, Willie Collum, for the second show, which looks back at October 2024, up until the October international break.

Like to see these. Maybe don't agree with the outcomes of some, I've no skin in the game in this round, but seeing the process and admitting mistakes are made is refreshing.

Bizarre comments on Souttar's handball. Clear from game audio that VAR and AVAR describe it as "deliberate" and that he "moves arm up to ball"

Walsh then says non delib no action and VAR say they agree? Collum then agrees again?

The audio literally contradicts the full outcome 😂

Consistency is the thing for me.
Shirt pulling a Aberdeen player in cup final nothing.
But shirt pulling against a Rangers player either the refs or var give it or they say it’s a mistake if they don’t.

But i am impressed by the transparency from Willie Gollum so far.

Surely the height of the ball above the player in the Rangers V St Johnston game has to be taken into account, he was never getting that, and he had a hold on the keeper too

Interesting that the referee from the St.Mirren v Kilmarnock game was downgraded to a championship game the following week, and was hopeless in that game as well. Maybe if Mr Collum started looking at the standard of refs below SPL level then maybe that would improve the full level of referees. But of course he just wants to pander to the big teams

Willie, you got that last one completely wrong.
Dessers was never getting the ball, the defender in front of him cleared the ball with a full header.
However, there should have been an on field review by the referee it was his call to make, was it a foul in the box?

Good video again but I do find it interesting they failed to comment on the obvious encroachment of the Rangers defender into the box before the Hibs penalty was taken. Deliberate or just an honest mistake?

40% were incorrect decisions according to Collum. That sees to indicate that the overly complicated system doesn't work and it still comes down to a subjective decision (excluding goalline and offsides).

I think the Desser's incident was a penalty for the shirt pull - BUT take a look at what McCausland (I think) is doing with the keeper. If VAR are going to be of any use then they can't just look at the shirt pull in isolation.
It's good to know that unnatural body position supersedes proximity - let's see how consistent that becomes.
