Thrifting Flea Markets & Estate Sales! Vintage Tips & Tricks

We're scooping up bargains and getting great ideas in this video! A last-minute appointment near Indianapolis leads us to the only estate sale in town, a large artist's home and studio with decades of books, art, garage items, kitchenware and surprises in hidden places! We send uranium glass, a carboy, a Kik-Step and blown stemware to the hold pile, then meet the delightful folks running the sale. The owner explains the joy to be found in estate sales and the importance of resurrecting antique and vintage items, while giving us some great deals!

Then it's on to Martinsville, Indiana, where I deliver the goods to a collector and take her tip to hit the Traderbaker's Flea Market in town! This is a huge place where local antique and vintage goods go to be sold (amongst everything from garage sale junk to new ATV's), and we find both real antiques and cool vintage that catches our eye all over! Thrifty prices on a 1970s designer stand, Victorian furniture, store display racks and wild MCM pottery and glass are enough to fill a shopping cart, and we take a lot home to show our collectors!

Knowledge is power for collectors, and we get some great tips and a fair warning in this video! We talk about why we even look at damaged stuff when it's new to us, and learn together how to tell the difference between a set of fake "1950s" wall pockets and the real thing. A chance encounter with a successful storage locker reseller tips us off on what lockers are more likely to have vintage stuff, and we leave edified and prepared for more antiquing adventures in the future!

3:05 oh my gawd. I was born in ‘89 and I was so not prepared for childhood flashbacks all bc of *that* step stool. Did I have them at home and at school? Maybe it was in each classroom? Idk, but I definitely remember them even the weight. Sitting and using your legs to release childhood energy and also stubbing your tiny toes with that heavy base😂. At least I did hehe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dang it! I was on my way to that same estate sale Friday to look for some vintage art supplies for my daughter but I got sidetracked at Southport Antique Mall (I am a new booth owner there thanks to your inspiration and education). Would have loved to run into you at the sale, I probably would have fainted lol. You are correct, Flipside is awesome, I go to their sales often.

It cracked me up when you said you only needed the shade from that bicentennial lantern lol
I’m always on the hunt for either a lantern that will fit a shade or shade that will fit a lantern lol

I almost flipped when I saw the display of Pfaltzgraff Yorktown @ 46:51 because it had the original pedestal coffee cups I had as a newlywed in the ‘70s. (On the bottom shelf.) Being married to a military man, we moved often and the cups eventually broke. I could never find cups like that ever again. And could never find replacements online, so I just got rid of the set. I honestly would have driven out there for those cups if I still had the same dish set!😂

I help set up estate sales. I love it. It's hard work, but rewarding at the same time.

Yes stealing ashtrays was a thing. My mum always use to have one that she liked from the pub and brought home. Also taking glasses from the pub is something we do here in the uk. Great video.

George, the pottery in the basement is North Carolina pottery, mostly by the Cole family. The red pie plate is the best piece, but watch those edges!

TY for the tip about using your palm to check for edge problems! I also love California Pottery

Hi George, I do very well with vintage sewing patterns and have sold them up to $180 Au. Some are more collectable than others but they are a good bread and butter item

PEEK (metal) polish does a great job removing light scratches and scrapes from plastics like melamine and lucite. It's also great for polishing glass, too.

Yes, stealing ashtrays was a thing back then. I have an ashtray marked "Stolen from Durhams Restaurant, Wytheville, Va, " Mr. Durham said he had so many stolen that he had them mase that way; So my Grandmother stole one.
