“The rainbow country: racial democracy in Brazil”

In this video, created for Brazilian Culture class, we investigated whether or not Brazil indeed lives in the “racial democracy” claimed by Gilberto Freyre or if it is an outdated stereotype not true to the actual experiences of Brazilians of color.

We believe this video demonstrates/depicts the Black Lives Matter movement’s outcry for the mistreatment and inequality experienced by Black people throughout the world. We hope that this video will bring light to these injustices and encourage individuals to seek personal, social, systemic, and global change.

As a Brazilian that actually reads Gilberto Freyre it’s important to say that when the video says that in Casa Grande & Senzala, Freyre coined the term “racial democracy” (democracia racial) you’re just factually wrong. You will not find this expression in the whole book, I challenge you to look for it.

Among many things, Freyre talks about miscegenation, a very important element in Brazilian identity that the video doesn’t even mention, perhaps because it’s an American video and I have the impression that miscegenation is an alien idea for America and that “mixed race” couples are a taboo even today. But I’m aware that my view on the US will always carry my cultural bias…

I’m sorry but when talking about a culture that is not your own one should be very careful to at least ge the facts right…
