You forgot that the Cairo Declaration that set the tone for how lands colonised by Japan would have to be rolled back. By default, this means that Taiwan would be returned to China. The Chinese civil war was the only thing that kept that from being realized in full. Had Kuomintang succeeded in reclaiming mainland China from the Communist Party, your claim that Taiwan is not really part of China would become a non starter.

What you do not know is most parents of Taiwan's armed forces personnel tell their children not to fight in case of an invasion by mainland China. Why fight a reunification of essentially one country, one culturally identical people?

Really interesting video. I went to Taiwan this year to film a video on their history for my own channel. Such a fascinating place.

I'd say discussing Japanese influences and discussing what truly is historical Taiwanese identity was the beat part of the video.

(Commenting at start of vid, might recomment later): I've lived in Taipei for almost 5 years and lived in China between 2014~2018, Taiwan is such a magical place with well~educated, open~minded, outward looking, proud people. It's my second home! Please don't disparage Formosa.

(Commenting after vid):
This was such an informative, chill video for such a destructive issue. I think Taiwan 100% has the strength to keep strong. Squeezed between 3 powers (Japan, China, USA) Taiwan keeps beeing open, curious, polite, and formose (beautiful).

The social contract between government and the people are completely different in Roman empire, Nomadic empire, Islamic empires, and Han Chinese Empire. You have to consider the completely different mindset between the west(Roman) and China when it comes to an issue. You presented the Chinese perspective, does not means the audience may understand it. The Qing dynasty was overthrown not because of they are Manchurians, it was because they seceded territory to Japan, which was Taiwan. In Chinese perspective, this is an continuation so First Sino-Japanese war, ww2, and civil war. It will instantly delegitimized the current government if they lose the war or recognize their independence. And try again. The mindset was so deeply imbedded that allowed China to reunited over and over again for millenniums. You can watch Singapore's prime minister Lee kuan yew comment on the issue.

War is a matter of capabilities and determination. The US could easily won the Korean and Vietnam war but they were lack of the determination. It really does not matter whether Taiwan is bluff or not, which is not even a deciding factor. China is not gambling on Taiwan's capabilities. The question Chinese government should are themselves are.
1, Are all the people with us if we face economic difficulties during the war?
2, Are the people going to blame us if we lose the war?
3, Are we willing to flatten the entire island, if we face difficulties during landing?
2, 3 are hard questions to answer, that is what is preventing it from happening. However if Taiwan is stupid enough to provide the causes, no doubt, this is gonna happen.

Cuba during the cold war might be a better comparison for Tawain's position.

“Loaded portrayal?” IMO, you showed restraint. To make the portrayal even more intentionally loaded you could have said that the Dutch had the earliest valid claim since they were the first to control all of the island… despite CCP’s lie about Formosa being part of China for 5, 000 years.

The US has no choice but to intervene because its' hegemony depends on chips. Without cheaply-enough made chips, bye-bye world reserve currency status.
If the US did not hold world reserve status, it could not afford military hegemony.

It’s it’s crazy to see how both Chinese (even those in the west & “Taiwanese”) AND white people overcomplicate explaining the situation. Where’s the German’s sense of logic when you need it?

Essentially, the answer to the question “Does Taiwan belong to China?” comes down to how you define “China” and “Taiwan”.

If you are talking about geography, then the answer is yes; the island of Taiwan belongs to the geographical location we call “China”.

But if you are referring to the governmental system, then the answer is no; the governmental system of Taiwan, officially the “Republic of China” is not under the mainland government of the “People’s Republic of China”. The current political situation is essentially a North-South Korea situation (but if the Kim regime controlled the entire peninsula & the ROK only controlled Jeju Island); Taiwan is the equivalent of South Korea where mainland China is the equivalent of North Korea.
