One thing I see a lot of people misunderstand about akutagawa’s character, is the fact that he “loves” or sees Dazai in a positive way, and doesn’t understand why Dazai likes atsushi more than him, and hates atsushi for that sol reason, in actuality, he hates Dazai and even says “ I’ll never let him say anything like that to me ever again!!” When relating to Dazai, and before he goes into coma, he only used atsushi to get his anger out because he couldn’t do that for Dazai, but while in the fight before atsushi puts him into coma, he realizes that there isn’t any use of killing atsushi, and that he’s just taking his anger out on him, but after he woke up, he starts to actually hate atsushi cuz he put him into a coma, and throughout the manga we can actually see that akutagawa understands why Dazai would pick atsushi over himself, he even sympathizes with atsushi multiple times, and we see in the manga the progression of atsushi and akutagawa’s relationship way better than the anime (the anime cut off a lot of manga panels)

Aku never wanted Dazai approval he wanted him to treat him nicely like a human younger, aku probably told himself when he was younger, that if he got his approval and not weak he could finally be treated like a person he probably told himself that if he got approval which means he’s not weak then he can be treated good it was probably his coping mechanism to help him from the abuse
