What an amazing phrase:

"Alleged historical facts".

i was stationed in Italy with the US Army in the late 1990's and was lucky enough to spend three days exploring Pisa on foot and spent from dawn to late at night walking Venice. one of the stops on our guided tour of Venice was via water-taxi and we stopped next to some island in the lagoon, i don't remember the name of it at this moment. there were GIANT signs posted on the shores talking about poisons in more than one language. the Italian lady who was our guide said the whole island was 'forbidden' to land on by ANYBODY. she said there had been a rat infestation on the island and it was so terrible that ARSENIC had been dropped on the island by helicopter. there was so much poison remaining on the island that anybody that walked there without a protective suit would DIE.

personally, i've never heard of Poveglia. probably because i don't give a single hoot over those 'ghost story' shows and all the 'redevelopment' parts of this island's story... happened well after i left Italy.

best of luck to the Poveglia for Everybody movement, i hope you get it back and enjoy cleaning up decades of neglect. after visiting places like this island around the world (with Uncle Sam's support) i know how craptastical and backbreaking the work will be.

one of my most heartfelt 'pie in the sky' dreams if i got super-rich off the lottery... buy a tiny home somewhere in Venice and spend a lazy expat retirement learning Italian and exploring one of my favorite cities on this planet.

Italy's history is so fascinating. You could study it for years and just scratch the surface. Just this one island has so much history...Viva Italia! 🌹😘

Use whatever background you want. As usual, love the presentation, writing, etc. Another great channel.

Thanks for the debunking. I remember watching one of those videos and it kept repeating the word "Poveglia" in an overdramatic voice.

As soon as I hear the words "Zach Baggins" I knew I could disregard that particular claim. Baggins was the biggest fraud on TV.

Ghost Adventures with Zak Bagans was such a fun show.

A “lazaretto, ” “lazarus hospital, ” and similar names commonly refer to a hospital for lepers (people with Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy). But there are also cases of a “lazaretto” being a hospital for plague victims, or a quarantine station for people with various contagious diseases, and/or for incoming sailors who might be disease carriers.

You gotta admit, Simon, that this is a pretty good, Blumhouse worthy story.

I’m always torn? Do I want information? Or do I want to keep believing the fun stories?

Apparently people have forgotten that people like to make entire stories up just to get attention. I simply came here to HOPEFULLY learn the REAL truth about this purportedly haunted island.

My favorite untrue claim from that Ghost Adventures episode:

*pulls out machete* If I see anything, I'm fucking something up.

I watched that Ghost Hunters episode, and it is just as hilarious as all his other "haunted" stories. 👻

This reminds me of the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, the final episode of the TV series "More Than Zero", which took place on a haunted island, topped with a mansion in the Venetian lagoon. The island was haunted by a black pearl, which possessed a greedy merchant named Frederico, who cursed his business partner Jacobi Sparochi with eternal life without eternal youth. Jonny Quest is obviously a work of fiction, but I can see how Poveglia influence popular culture, even cartoons from the 90s, still an interesting ghost story to tell.

That story about Mussolini was literally the plot line of the movie Joker! Where Arthur's mother was thrown in an insane asylum for attesting that her baby belongs to the powerful Mr Wayne. Thomas denied that claim and was persistent even when approached by Arthur, becoming violent.
