Until recently there was one issue in the polarized US which had enjoyed bipartisan support - the Biden administration's strong commitment to aiding Ukraine. But in the course of campaigning, the first voices of dissent have emerged - with some Republicans saying the US can't afford to keep writing 'blank checks.'
In the Midwestern battleground state of Ohio, Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance is against funding the war in Ukraine. How is his stance playing with the state's Ukrainian community? DW's Ines Pohl went to the Cleveland suburb of Parma to find out.

It's weird when you see a news agency from another country do a story on your home town xD

Good.
Citizens of Ohio who are of Ukrainian descent make sure your vote is decisive for Democracy here and your heritage in Ukraine.
Glory to Ukraine.

The billions in aid being given to Ukraine now is a drop in the bucket compared to to the trillions spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. Much of that money was wasted on supporting a corrupt regime in Afghanistan and funding the ineffective Afghan army. The Ukrainians at least have the will to fight, unlike the Afghans.

We are not Ukrainians but we support Ukrainians right to freedom.
We urge all Americans to consider fully supporting Ukraine !

Funding the Ukrainian effort is cheaper than fighting russia ourselves in 5-10 years.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting accountability but saying you flat out won’t help Ukraine is absurd. There is an issue in the US where people, usually from the Trump side, sympathize with Russia (not sure, but I think it’s because previously they viewed Putin as a strong leader who stood up to “liberal values” and so they can’t emotionally untangle themselves from him now)

Russia is and has been an adversary (and I’d say enemy) of the United States for a long time. Their media and government have said many times that they want to reduce the US
‘s power and influence within the world and regularly blame the United States for everything going on in Russia and try to turn their population against the United States. So anyone who considers themselves a “patriotic American” should by default view the Russian government as an enemy the same way they view Iran or China in a negative light.

It really is a small price in comparison to having to fight Russia by ourselves.
Here in Germany it's the same discussion, but I still say: let's give Ukraine everything that's necessary for them to kick Russia out of their country, or else we could be next.

@DW News • I can't keep up with all the political reporting on the U.S.A. midterms. However, even though I have seen other reports on the tight race in OHIO, DW is the first to look at the possible influence of the Ukrainian heritage votes. Thanks for covering this.

@3:25 There are plenty of Americans who don't have a home, or who have food issues. The fact that Ukrainian leaders mismanaged is not worthy cause to reap our resources for our own needy. No shortage of bleeding hearts but you came to the US for a reason. Now you want to drag us down with you.

No, dumb question. US has 300+ million citizens from all around the world. And secondly, appeasing dictators is not popular here in the States, some republicans voicing favor for Putin can not overcome the huge tsunami.

Some Americans just don’t have the intelligence to see the big picture, just greedy and think of me, me, me.
as usual.

lol america - it's cheaper to 'fund' the war / help ukraine - instead of what will come if you don't :D
But yea, typical american politics is a comedy show.

It’s not support to Ukraine only. It’s respect to Democracy and respect to citizens of the world. Poor politicians who can not see further than their own ‘backyard’!
