On 4th of July 1997, sometime between 9 PM and 10:30 PM, I was at Farbhof in Zürich, Switzerland, listening to Radio 24 and they played Cowboys at 2/3 speed, and having heard Portishead years prior, I thought Beth Gibbons had been replaced by a male vocalist. I had a cassette-recording radio with me at the time, and that is one of my memories from 1997.

The swooping cello underneath repeating carries the song. Geoff is a genius.

Beth has the ability to sound like everything from an evil witch to an angel.

This is stealthy, creepy, trippy, and beautiful all at once

What a killer opening track for this great album.

I miss the 90's- it was a time where genres collided and created truly original forms like this

I heard a song once, whiskey drunk in the back of someone's car, and it was the most haunting, beautiful song I had ever heard- there was something about cowboys in the title or the group name (and nothing by Cowboy Junkies rings any bells...)
This isn't the song.
I may never find it...
Sheena, if you remember Chelsea from West Plains, MO, who worked with you at Fashion Bug, and the night of the Canadian Mist (I certainly don't remember...imagine that...)
let me know.
It was several lifetimes ago, but I can't forget what I can't remember, haha...
To good times, forever and ever ago. At least I THINK they were good...
And to the mystery girl I had the night-long, intensely intellectual conversation with- I don't recall exactly what we spoke of, but it was a conversation worth having, I know that much...
Whiskey makes me sentimental and philosophical, and endlessly loquacious, it was a good night, of that I am almost certain...
Good times, lost in the Canadian Mist...(😳😝😉)

One of the scariest songs I ever heard yet I'm still playing it in 2020

Lyrics:
Did you sweep us far from your feet
Reset in stone this stark belief
Salted eyes and a sordid dye
Too many years
But don't despair this day, will be their damnedest day
Ooh, if you take these things from me
Did you feed us tales of deceit
Conceal the tongues who need to speak
Subtle lies and a soiled coin
The truth is sold, the deal is done
But don't despair this day, will be their damnedest day
Ooh, if you take these things from me
Undefined, no signs of regret
Your swollen pride assumes respect
Talons fly as a last disguise
But no return, the time has come
So don't despair this day, will be their damnedest day
Ooh, if you take these things from me
Ooh, if you take these things from me..

A very good copy of this song. It's so hard to find a good quality recording and this song really needs it. Great song too
Dugald
unbelievable sound ...geoff is a genius ...i m very glad that i found them when i was 19 ...best years 90 's .The best decade, best albums. Artists like portishead they appear every 100 years ...geoff before portishead was sound engineer for massive attack... (fav.band)
