That makes so much sense to me - one of the german north frisian islands, Föhr, which is rather close to my hometown, has a city called Wik, which I knew meant harbour. Reykja meaning smoke is reasonably close to german "Rauch", but I'd never have seperated the syllables like that - I feel like a puzzle piece has been correctly placed in my mind.

I know spanish with some portuguese and Japanese. Japanese is easier than icelandic.

My hometown is "high river bank, because there is... let's call it a river, and one side was about 2m higher. We moved most of the river later so i's really cute, and half of the city is on the other side and also the place where it's barely 2m higher is really short, can somewhat protect 10 huts and a donkey from floods, before we moved the river. I's been a good 1500 years, we should rename it.

When I went to Iceland years back, I stayed at the Hafnarfjörður hotel. I still can't begin to know how to pronounce it. Was a constant struggle to tell the coach driver on way back from trips/tours.

Most places have weirdly unimaginative names if you translate them into modern English. Almost every town is either named after its founder or whatever prominent geological feature is nearby.

Dane here. I literally live in "Poop Town"! My town used to be called "Skidenpyt" (Poop-puddle) until the rich people moved here a hundred years ago and re-named it "Højbjerg" (High Mountain). Which is hilarious 'cause Denmark is flat AF.
