Volkswagen is accelerating its electric vehicle efforts with the unveiling of the ID. GTI Concept show car at the IAA Mobility event in Munich. The concept vehicle is part of Volkswagen's broader strategy to launch eleven new all-electric models by 2027, aiming to offer the widest range of EVs among all manufacturers. The ID. GTI Concept is designed to bring the iconic GTI label into the electric era, promising a blend of sportiness, technological progress, and emotional appeal. Alongside its electric offerings, Volkswagen will continue to produce efficient combustion engine vehicles and is focusing on enhancing its core models like the Golf, Passat, and Tiguan.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, emphasized the company's customer-centric approach, stating that Volkswagen has realigned its brand to meet customer expectations across electric, combustion engine, and hybrid vehicles. The ID. GTI Concept, in particular, aims to combine driving pleasure with sustainability, offering a new interpretation of the GTI DNA for the electric age. The production version of the vehicle, based on the modular electric drive (MEB) platform, is expected to hit the roads in 2027.

The company is also focusing on its ACCELERATE strategy, aiming to become a "love brand" by offering affordable mobility products. By 2026, Volkswagen plans to introduce the ID. 2all, an electric car priced at less than 25,000 euros, to extend its portfolio in the entry-level segment. The brand is also introducing enhanced software and infotainment features across all models, including larger displays and features-on-demand services for functions like navigation.

In addition to its vehicle offerings, Volkswagen is engaging with the public through its Open Space initiative at Odeonsplatz in Munich. The space will host a variety of programs, including panel discussions on social topics and concerts, aiming to foster dialogue and inclusion. The company is committed to eliminating barriers and engaging in discussions with as many people as possible to better understand customer needs in areas like vehicle design and operation.

Beyond its product and technology advancements, Volkswagen is making a concerted effort to be an inclusive and approachable brand. The Open Space initiative and the brand's focus on diversity and inclusion are indicative of this commitment. Volkswagen aims to be a brand "for all people," and is taking steps to ensure that its exhibition spaces are accessible to everyone, including wheelchair users and the visually impaired. By engaging in open dialogues on topics like diversity and inclusion, the company is not just looking to sell cars, but also to build a community around its brand. This holistic approach reflects Volkswagen's broader vision for the future, where customer engagement and social responsibility go hand in hand with technological innovation.

The ID. GTI Concept is a significant milestone for Volkswagen as it represents the electrification of one of its most iconic labels, the GTI. The concept car is built on Volkswagen's modular electric drive (MEB) platform, which is a cornerstone of the brand's electric future. The vehicle aims to offer a perfect blend of driving pleasure and everyday usability, staying true to the GTI's legacy of being sporty yet practical. While specific technical details are yet to be released, the concept promises to be fully connected and extremely emotive, offering a driving experience that aligns with the brand's focus on "100 percent electric, 100 percent emotion."

Scheduled for production in 2027, the ID. GTI Concept is part of Volkswagen's ambitious plan to launch eleven new electric models by that year. The car is expected to offer a spacious interior and long-range capabilities, potentially up to 700 kilometers, according to presales information of the ID.7, another all-electric Volkswagen saloon. This extended range is a crucial feature, as it addresses one of the most significant barriers to EV adoption—range anxiety. By offering a sporty, long-range, and emotionally appealing electric vehicle, Volkswagen aims to capture a broad audience, from the GTI enthusiasts to new adopters of electric mobility.
