Join Modern Drummer for an up-close and personal experience with Disturbed's Mike Wengren, as we delve into the details of his custom "Pearl Reference One" drum kit. I don't want to take anything away from Mike here, but I have to comment on the lead singer (David Drainman) of this band. I have seen interviews with him and he is the most well-spoken, eloquent, intelligent rocker that I have ever heard interviewed. That dude really can think and speak. The first time I heard him interviewed, I was frankly sitting with my mouth hanging open. The entire band is top notch talent.

I've always loved Mike's grooves and interesting patterns he plays that incorporate those tom polyrhythms. Often it's not so much what he plays that's striking as it is the choice moments where he allows the track to breathe with some brief pauses. Doesn't overcomplicate things and is still cool despite giving room for the other instrumentation and singing. Every time they come through the wife and I go see Disturbed. It's become a ritual with us. The couple times we've had the opportunity to meet and talk with them, they've been nothing but friendly and generous of their time. Looking up at the signed Evans g1 head on my wall and smiling. Thanks Mike and thank you Modern Drummer for showcasing one of my fave drummers!

I remember when I first started playing, and being obsessed with Mike and his kits. Long time sabian player, and his 10000 fists tour kits is still one of the most badass setups I’ve ever seen! Thanks for the early inspiration Mike!

Amazing how different pro drummers are from each other. Can see his foot technique is very unique with looks like very low spring tension. Yet they all get the job done well with their very different techniques.

I'm an old school Deadhead but I married a little lady that is a headbanger. She has gotten me to see this band live as well as the likes of Staind, Avenged Sevenfold, Bad Wolf and that kind of thing. I still love the Dead, but these kinds of bands really PERFORM for the crowd. I mean like our money MEANS something to them. This band specifically, really impressed me. Those pedals are absolutely sick.
