Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Kyiv for talks amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
READ MORE: U.S. President Joe Biden asked Congress Thursday to approve another $33 billion in aid for Ukraine to help it combat Russia's destructive invasion over the next five months of the war.
Shortly before Biden outlined the plan in a televised address, the White House said the new spending would include more than $20 billion in new weaponry and military assistance, $8.5 billion in economic aid and $3 billion for humanitarian help for the war-torn country that Russia invaded two months ago.
The new total is more than twice the $13.6 billion figure that Congress already authorized, a total that now has been mostly exhausted in arms shipments to Ukraine in recent weeks.
The new proposal also includes working more closely with international partners to "recover assets linked to foreign corruption," and to extend the amount of time to pursue money laundering prosecutions from five years to 10 years.
A White House statement said the measures would "enhance the United States government's authority to hold the Russian government and Russian oligarchs accountable for President (Vladimir) Putin's war against Ukraine."
