Using Zip sheathing saved us time and labor while resulting in a more airtight and weatherproof enclosure. We love that it integrates with their stretch tape and liquid flashing products seamlessly, to make weathertight penetrations a breeze.

The zip system is one of the best things to happen to the building industry. Tyvek will be a thing of the past soon. Make sure you roll that tape after you put it on though.

$2600 doesn't seem like much of a splurge to improve the integrity and longevity of your house!

zip looks great, as a framing carpenter I always orient the sheeting horizontally to maximize the strength axis inherrent in OSB. All my latest builds have 9 or 10 foot walls at least, some 20 foot tall or better, and so there is no benefit to standing sheets vertically, and every good reason to help add strength in the horizontal axis, crossing all vertical members(studs) It is "Framing Basics"

I love how everybody saying it’s put on wrong, and should be horizontal… It doesn’t matter as long as it’s nailed properly

This is good stuff as long as it’s installed correctly. Unfortunately, you rarely see it installed correctly. Most of the time nails are driven way too deep. The tape isn’t stuck correctly and then the right orientation for overlap. The stuff itself is great though.

So it's currently $11 for osb. $29 for zip. Pretty big difference.

Your wall sheathing is stronger when installed horizontally. A testiment to this is the same reason floor sheathing is installed horizontal to floor joists. Would you install your floor sheathing parallel to the joists??..no.

Tyvek has been used for decades without issues I'd like to see this stuff in 20 years

Should it be horizontal AND staggered?

The price isn’t bad at all. It’s worth the extra money for what you’re getting and protection over the life of your house.😊

Stagger the joints for a stronger wall, looks good though

Looks good. You normally would run horizontally, which provides more strength to the wall. It looks very neat

Best thing for building envelope performance which drastically improves everything over time, as an insulation guy, I know how much better this system is for health reasons alone

That green coating on the zip siding is laytex paint, sorry to burst your bubble

People think the zip system is the way to go, but can’t understand why it takes 5x the cost. All the special tapes, rollers, having to orient it horizontally, liquid flashing over penetrating nails, having to play with the nailer all day to set nails flush. All to get the warranty. All to get the same result as a properly done osb and house wrap installed in a fraction of the time.
But I’ll put whatever on a house for the right price.

6/23/2023, Just bought additional Zip Sheating at Lowes paid $26.30! Also bought some back in 2022! Paid over $55 a sheet and bought zip liquid flash, called ZIP 2.0! Use this to fit over driven Nail holes!

Another great option is Zip-R with 1”-4” (R-3-R-12) insulation bonded to the back. Good cavity insulation is fine but, accounting for uninsulated framing underneath the sheathing you can lose a substantial amount of your overall R-value- like 20-25%, even before accounting for windows.
