Alternate plot line: steve doent talk and cant interact with the humans as he is always alone. Then he learns to. If that happens we may get some emotional depth.

My biggest pet peeve is that they went with live action. They could done something with people becoming Minecraft characters when they enter. Because if you throw real people into a CGI world they will look greenscreened in no matter how much you try.
