As with most GG music, beautiful chaos... but not really chaotic if you're paying attention

The music and lyrics are a variation on themes from the first track.

It just dawned on me, Gentle Giant are releasing Steven Wilson Remix of the entire Free Hand album at the end of June, so of course you should go there next!!! Already pre ordered a copy for myself :)

At the end there's a tape sound because it's rewinding and the story repeats itself

Thanks for this, needed that today. I figured since you where a bit down on The Face, you`d put off this song for a month or two :) 4 things I wish to say to this:

1. I`m absolutely in awe of Dereks voice in this, the power and the glory, uh I mean control is nothing short of insane!

2.Those "Hails" from the "public" in this song are the type of hails I too would shout if I had a gun pointed at (If you didn`t catch it on the first listen, listen again and take notice of how the hails trails off...)

3. I think Proclamation and Valedictory works as perfect bookends to this album. Everything that was positive and hopeful about Proclamation has turned to desperation and dictatorship in Valedictory, and I absolutely love that. This is a perfect album to play from start to finish (and then all over again)...

4. I vote for your next GG album to be Free Hand or maybe In A Glass House, those two alongside The Power and the Glory are considered by many the pinnacle of their musical career. Free Hand I`ve already heard, probably their most accessible album I`d guess and SO funky! In a Glass House I`ve heard two songs, The runaway and Experience and I`m really excited for the rest. I`m trying to save 3 Friends and Acquiring the Taste for a later time, as to savior this great musical experience.

Have a great day! :)

In A Glass House is a great next GG album to review. Kudos for doing the entire (or most of the?) album!

The album is not over! There's still one more song: the title track. It was originally left out, but included in reissues. Check it out.

Highly organized chaos, the heavier side of GG.
Thank you for that, carry on

When you get back to Gentle Giant may I suggest their album "In A Glass House". It was only available on import back in the day. It is the album just before "The Power and The Glory", coming right after they put out "Octopus". Do the title track or perhaps just jump right in with the first song, "The Runaway". Trust me. You know you can't go wrong anyway. It's Gentle Giant.

I say hat's off for doing this album! It's one of their best and a favourite of mine.

Wonderful introduction!
I really need to get into this band.. I have heard a few songs, but this album seems like the perfect one to buy for Prog fan new listeners of Gentle Giant?

here you really do a perfectly thorough analysis. It's so entertaining and interesting to listen to. I am so grateful that I got to see them live in Stockholm in 1976, maybe they were at their peak as well. I want to hear you more in "In a glass house"

Yes, there are reprises of motifs (both lyrical and musical used in previous tunes on the album....They were masters of statement and re-capitulation.

Are you going to do the title track as well? It wasn't technically on the album originally and only released as a single), but it's been included as a bonus track on CD reissues.

It is one of their best, in my view. Only In a Glass House, Three Friends and Octopus would compare. An achievement!

I love, love, love "Proclamation", and I guess it was so nice they did it twice! This is a fun twist on the theme, but the creepy discordant funk of the opener appeals to me more than the snarling hard rock reprise. I would recommend saving the bonus track "The Power and the Glory" for a time when you're more desperate for new Gentle Giant songs, and instead move on to one of their other masterworks — in addition to the two you've reviewed, In A Glass House, Three Friends, Acquiring the Taste, Free Hand, Interview, and The Missing Piece are all top-tier albums in my opinion.

The way that the tempo breaths just doesn't happen anymore.

I knew most of these mainly from their live recordings. It's been good to hear the studio versions in their intended sequence: a kind of socio-political/psychological concept album. I would go to the Free Hand album next to continue the journey.
