The ELD mandate was introduced to improve safety, but has it unintentionally increased the risk for truck drivers, especially solo operators and small carriers? In this video, we delve into the rise in fatal truck accidents since 2018, examining how Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) may be pushing drivers to dangerous extremes. From the pressure to meet tight deadlines, leading to risky driving behaviors, to the challenges of finding truck parking and dealing with unpaid idle time, we explore the real-world impacts of these regulations on truckers. Are larger companies adapting better, or is everyone feeling the strain? Join us as we discuss why regulations need to align with the realities of the road.

I drive without an ELD . I been in this industry for almost 13 years and I do 65 mph. I don't rush at all. I'm not out here racing against a clock trying to get more loads and I park when and where I want to. I had a ELD before and I was rushing trying to maximize my drive time and it increased my road rage too.

Here i am 6 hours after i stopped because my ELD told me to. Wide awake, can't sleep. I will be forced to drive with little sleep because the load needs to get there on time. Thats 6 hours i could have kept driving.

I had a shipper take 6 hours to load my truck, and I was there an hour early for my appointment.

Another reason for accidents is the horrible pay and the trouble it causes at home. Being anxious and having your mind on how the fk im going to get ahead and being in the worst possible mood causes more accidents.... rushing to get more loads in to make a good payday.

All I can say is the ELD definently hasn't improved anything for safety.
I have been trucking for 46 years and I was a more rested, safer driver when I drove when I needed to and stopped and rested when and where I needed to .
Yup by adding a stop watch in the cab will improve safety. Only a government official that has never sat in a truck could think that's a great idea.

As a veteran driver the ELD was stupid from the beginning, Totally out of touch with reality, and it was obvious from the beginning that there would be more accidents. My surprise is the lack of reaction from the public and authorities who must be seeing the data. Burt

Our body clock having to be controlled by the ELD is the issue. Naturally we wake up at 7a and be to bed at 10p. That ELD works differently lol sleeping pattern all over the place. Not good at all

ELD’s are a pain and a revenuers dream. Just let us drive and sleep when we want.

Eliminate Hours of Service. Keep the e-logs if you want to monitor how much someone is working, sure I can get that. There is no more need for limited hours and restrictions on hours when I can and can't drive. I know when I'm tired, I know when I should and shouldn't drive. I don't need a damn computer telling me when to do that

It's not the ELD. It's the bizarre hours of service rules. Especially when running recaps, it becomes absolutely ridiculous! If they just want us to drive 11 hours in 24 hours, then let's just do that. The HOS rules are 🤪 CRAZY!

ELD's would be a good thing....if they would allow a lot of leniency built into the law....exp. its much safer to drive an extra hour to get to your destination, then take your 10 hour break, instead if having to park, like an hour away, then start out in the morning and drive in rush hour traffic

I hate when I start a Sunday at 5 am, then Monday I can’t start until 6 am, then Tuesday I have to wait till 10am and then „Hey, we need you start at 4 am to get this load snuck in on time.“ Your sleep schedule is all over the place, and then sometimes you have to „sleep“ when your body is awake. I hate when you have 2 „10 hour“ resets in a 24 hour period and they wonder why you’re so tired after being in sleepberth at the shipper for 14 hours. Your sleep schedule can get really screwed up.

As for the ELD mandate, I was glad to use it over paper logs. Much faster process. Especially noting the towns and all the stops. I do see many of the problems with it, for the driver, for the carrier and for the government. Doing away with it would be wrong. The reason we have logs is because companies would make drivers (or even drivers deciding for themselves) to drive too much and be too tired to handle the stresses of the road. Sure there could be some improvements. Which is why I am a member of OOIDA, and you should as well if you care about driving issues. Come be a part of the conversation.

ELD are the dumbest thing ever. Causes parking issues and sleepy drivers or sick drivers causes issues as they drive when they should be stopped. Then over time from shippers and recievers. The choice should be left to the trucker choice of ELD or paper logs. I take paper logs all the time. I got a watch to look at not some bullsh1t device ticking down. Oh i can move my truck in a parking a few feet without messing with logs, to let another trucker out of his sleeping spot. Oh big brother doesn't need to know. Still sitting here on sleeper. Now i guess the big companies like to cheat the system and give the single driver a co pilot to drive more miles on. Bingo! Screw the systtem DOT.
