Those seats are supposed to have a clarification explaining that whoever buys them should speak English. That happened to me once in the terminal they offered these seats and they explained me that I had to know English to seat there.

Ok, wait if they got escorted out and no one else was willing to sit in the exit seats, who is supposed to assist the crew in case of an emergency? Wouldn’t it be better just to have SOMEONE there at that point, even if they didn’t speak English?

“She’ll be smoking a cigarette on the way down”

Had me rolling on the floor 💀💅

They didn’t even ask me if I was able to get up and open the door, the second they saw my cane they made me sit in a window seat instead of the isle seat even though I paid to have an isle seat. The door was 5 feet away and I can walk that short of a distance no problem. They wouldn’t listen to me until I unbuckled (we hadn’t taken off yet) and say “I’ll get up and do a little jig right now, I can get the door.”

The people not wanting to switch is dumb. You get like a foot and a half more leg room lol

I don't remember, but when you buy that specific seat, you actually get a warning if you can handle the responsibilities of that seat.

They should have cleared clarification to the parents about those seats and I surely hope they got their refund bc that’s ass

I had these seats when I was about 18 and looked way too young to have the responsibility of freeing the entire cabin from a fiery death.

Hadn’t even finished puberty and they let my dumb ass sit there, English ability wouldn’t have saved anyone on that flight.

Here’s some tea coming from a flight attendant…it’s not us making the rule. It is an FAA federal law/rule you have to be able to speak English and you have to be 15 years old and older

To be fair, I've witnessed what can happen in a language rift on a plane. It was both hilarious and infuriating to watch an English speaking attendant try to tell an older Dominican lady she couldn't keep her bag on her lap because it was too big, while she was convinced he was trying to take her bag so he could steal from it, and would not let go.

They legit played tug of war with her enormous purse. She lost it, started slapping at him, cursing at him in Spanish. Maybe the language matters sometimes. Wouldn't want to see that go down in front of a very necessary emergency exit in the heat of the moment lol.

I feel like you shouldn't have to pay extra if there's an added job description. Seems like that should cancel out the extra leg room.

The Federal Aviation Administration has numerous regulations that govern who can, and can't, sit in an emergency exit row. It’s not a personal slight from an airline.

I mean... just having flown a lot those tickets normally explain that you're going to have to help in case of an emergency and explain the requirements. It's not like it's a suprise 😅 And you need to know English to be able to help the flight attendants get everyone out. You have to be committed to being the last passanger off the plane in the event of an emergency. It may feel silly but it's actually a huge responsibility.

I do this for my job, you have to be able to understand and repeat the directions in English in order to help evacuate the plane in 90 SECONDS

Okay but federal aviation regulations tho. if flight attendants willingly and knowingly let someone sit there who will be unable to assist in an emergency (due to any physical discomforts, language barriers, traveling with a small child, etc.) and an FAA person is auditing the flight, the flight attendant PERSONALLY (not the airline) will be fined $1000… so please don’t give them a hard time. It’s not their rules.. it’s literally the federal government’s.

They have a whole list of disqualifications for this (14 CFR 121.585), it’s not some arbitrary thing that they enforce to pick on people.
Your parents will be entitled to a refund for the extra space seats if they were not able to sit there due to these regulations.

it makes sense that they were removed from the seats even though it seems cruel, but they absolutely should have been informed of the seating requirements and not offered the seats in the first place. there are seats towards the front of the section that tend to have more room for people who need it and don’t meet the requirements of the emergency exit seats.

their comfort is important, but the safety of all of the passengers is prioritized over individual comfort. an elderly couple with a language barrier are likely not going to be able to assist the crew in safe and efficient evacuation. should something happen that requires all of the passengers to quickly get out through those seats, the couple would be at risk of injuries and unable to help other elderly or disabled passengers.

I worked at a call center and my smoking buddy was a greek lady in her 60s.. she was hilarious! In a Greek accent: "When I give birth to my daughter, I was smoking in hospital while I holding her. What's the problem?" LOL

The flight attendant is required by Federal Aviation Regulations to ask each person in the exit rows if they are able and willing to assist in an emergency and each person must reply either yes or no. I’d she can’t speak English, she can’t understand the question and therefore can’t answer. She must also be able to understand any additional instructions and/or commands in an emergency. Again, if she can’t speak English…. It’s a Federal regulation, not the airline’s.

So, as a flight attendant.... it states when you buy those seats that you have to fit the qualifications. If you dont fit the qualifications then you shouldnt have bought the seats. If someone from the FAA was onboard and saw the flight attendant knowingly allowed someone to stay seated there that didnt qualify to the flight attendant would be fined $1000's of $$. The people sitting there dont just open the door they assist in the evacuation. At least 2 are going to the bottom of the escape slide and sending people away from the plane, at least 1 is helping people out of the door. I have to be able to yell these commands at you and you comprend them enough to assist me. If you are standing there confused you could get us all killed. I know it hardly ever happens but it could. There are rules for a reason. The FAA doesnt play around when it comes to safety and neither do I. Fun fact: half of the time people dont buy those seast because they dont want the responsibility (which is completely understandable) so people who are traveling using airline benefits (flight attendants, pilots, airport staff, etc) will get sat there. There are usually at least like 5-15 traveling benefit users on the plane and we dont mind getting the extra legroom. 🤷‍♂️
