Defence experts say the inauguration of the AUKUS alliance presents a “united front” which will deter China from any “adventurism” in the Indo-Pacific region.
The agreement between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom will see the Australian Defence Force enhance its naval capabilities with a new fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.
“What this shows, first and foremost, is that there is a lot more concern about what China is doing in London, Canberra and Washington than we know about,” non-resident fellow at the US Studies Centre James Brown said.
“That’s driven by things like the fact that China has built three new fields in the northwest of the country full of nuclear missile silos, it’s modernising its nuclear force.
“So, this is about presenting a united front, a deterrence to any adventurism that China might be thinking about.
“It’s about positioning these three democracies to be at the forefront of the development of strategic and critical technologies in AI and cyber quantum.”
