I built the prototype for the first desktop computer at the IBM research center in Yorktown Heights NY, the XT model. in 1984. The building design is awesome

Actually started with an 8088 processor. The 8086 came later.

The CPU was not the better (and more expensive) 8086 but the Intel 8088 which had a multiplexed bus which shared 8 bits or address with 8 bits (and more) of the 16 bit data. Internally it was the same 16 bit processor.

The guy is rewriting history. There was never any intention to make it open. They used off the shelf OS and CPU as a matter of expediency. They knew they were late and wanted fast time to market. Also, they thought the proprietary BIOS code would be enough protect it.

Turns out they were wrong. The BIOS got legally copied and that was the start of the PC clones.

Second time around, IBM came out with the PS/2 system architecture with the micro channel system bus, I.e. as proprietary as they could be.

And it failed.

They didn't have the time and also didn't want to invest the money to do it the big corpo way. If they did it that way then by the time the product was out there would be Apple 4 or similar out dominating the market :)

And they've only continued to get more valuable. Right now they're doing quantum computing and more general computing research.

IBM was not thinking of making the platform open, they did not publish the BIOS code or anything else, Compaq has to reverse ingenier the machine and IBM was piss off. They could not sue because they were under regulatory scrutiny. The real reason they use of the shelf components is because they rush the project. Before doing a full video talking nonsense, do a little research.

If you ever find yourself wondering why Apple is so comparatively stubborn about letting people tinker with their devices, or letting anyone else use their software, just look at how this all worked out for IBM; great for us consumers, terrible for IBM. 😂
